Wondering whether this year’s event’s better than last year? Definitely. The choice of performers maybe a disappointment but when comes to the quality of music, they really delivered it. And speaking of the services provided during the event, more booths were set up with more choices of foods and drinks. Booths from Coffee Beans, Desserts, Miri Cafe, Marriotts’ Restaurant etc were enough to drain out my money that turned into good sh*t. Sigh…
On the first day, we had some fish and chips as our dinner before the starting of the event. The David Gomes Jazz Sextet was given the privilege to perform the opening act.
Like a starter before a meal, they played really fabulous pieces of jazz music and the bassist was so cool on the double bass. Those trios on saxaphones and trumpet also managed to impress me with their ability to hit high notes. Featuring Junji Delfino on vocals, her voice somehow reminded me of Ella Fitzgerald…and that’s enough to tell how good her vocal is. Bravo to them.
I didn’t really catch up with Son2Nos, the band that played during each performance break of 15 minutes since it would be hard to regain back your sitting area once you step out from it. I know, it’s a regret knowing that the upcoming performance was just…you’ll find out yourself in the next paragraph.
KCP4 was the second to perform. Comprising 2 Germans on piano and trumpet, and 2 Indians on vocals and dholak respectively; their music’s more onto the South Indian traditional music with the pianist playing the melody of the music while the trumpeter hitting every single exact notes of what the vocals sang. To be honest, I didn’t really appreciate their music and it just wasn’t my type…but a big round applause goes to the amazing trumpeter.
As Lluis Coloma was about to take the centre stage, everyone were swarming inside the Pavilion awaiting the master of boogie. Being the crowd’s favourite for being the highlight of last year’s event, he did it again together with the same band line-up.
They performed some notable music being played in the past, including the local folks favourite Goin’ to Malaysia. Everyone were dancing to his boogie-woogie and as usual, there’s no doubt on why they were calling him back for this year’s event.
The last to perform was a band called The Dirty Dozen Brass Band who came all the way from New Orleans. They were more into funky music with a bit of jazz element in it but I must say that it was rather…a plain performance by them.
I was putting high expectation on them to play some kind of blazing music like what Lluis Coloma and the gang did but it was rather disappointing to see them as the highlight of the event. The music was good but it just doesn’t suit to be the last performance…
I have to say that The David Gomes Jazz Sextet featuring Junji Delfino is definitely a worth-watching and all I know is that their name is prominent in the local jazz scene, more specifically in KL. But the night definitely belongs to Lluis Coloma and we definitely gonna miss him and his gang hell a lot for their inspiring performance.

LLuis Coloma came back?!? ARGH!
At least Trevor Jala didn’t come back; otherwise I would have been REALLY sore for missing this. I miss Miri.
Cheers for the review.
JJ: Hey Sheena, yeah…they brought back those boogie-woogie music we sorely missed since last year. Cheers to you too, buddy.

Thanks for the kind words for David Gomes’ band… we had such a great time playing there! It was certainly quite an experience for us, any myself, personally. We’re glad that you enjoyed the show that we did..
Do come by KL and listen to us sometime, and other bands as well, as there are quite a few jazz venues to check out now!
Take care.
PS: The horn section line-up for Lluis’ band was (l-r): alto, tenor, tenor, baritone actually.
JJ: Wow, Julian…what a surprise for a guy who just went on stage to stumble upon this blog. A small world indeed…and yea, I’m really looking forward to meet up with you guys again. And yea, pardon me for the mistake regarding the horn section line-up. Anyway, cheers!
